The use of the native language in Georgian EFL classes

Abstract

The issue of including or excluding the learners’ native language in the EFL classroom has been the subject of ongoing discussion and controversyforalongtime.Thispaperattemptstoinvestigatetheuseof nativeGeorgianlanguageinEnglishclassesattwoGeorgianUniversities.The
mainobjectiveswereto examine thepurpose of L1 use and the attitudesof Georgianstudents towards the role of their nativelanguageinthe EFL
classroom.Theresearch was carried outin Georgia,Tbilisi.Participantswere freshmen and sophomore students of the English language department.Datawerecollectedthroughoptionaltypequestionnaires.TheresultsrevealedthatthereisagreatneedofL1useintheclassroombetween
students.Itisproposedthatteacherswhowantstudentstobefluentinalanguageandbesuccessfulintheirfuturecareer,shouldsatisfytheirneeds.
