The role of EFL reading skills at an international university and the higher cognitive activities in the process of reading for academic purposes

Abstract


The level of students’ reading skills best forecast their academic achievement. It is especially important for students learning
in English as
a foreign language.
Research
shows
that too often students’
skills are
not adequate to
the tasks that higher
education
poses in front of
them.
The
research
was held in 5 universities
representing 5 countries (Azerbaijan, Iraq, Georgia,

Finland,
and Turkey)
which are on different
educational level,
concerning the
student motivation to read, quality of their reading
skills
and possible solutions.
